If you've ever wondered whether a tanning lotion actually makes a difference - or whether it's just a nice-smelling extra step, you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: yes, it genuinely does. But not all lotions work the same way and understanding why makes choosing the right one a lot easier.
Here's a proper breakdown of what's going on when you apply a tanning lotion, and which of our best-sellers deliver the best results.
What Actually Happens to Your Skin When You Tan
Whether you're on a sunbed or sunbathing abroad on holiday, tanning is a biological response. UV light triggers your skin cells to produce melanin - the pigment responsible for that golden colour. The more melanin your skin produces, the deeper and longer lasting your tan.
The problem? Dry, dehydrated, or poorly prepped skin is far less efficient at this process. UV light doesn't penetrate as effectively through dead surface skin cells, and a patchy skin barrier leads to patchy colour.
This is precisely where a tanning lotion earns its place in the routine.
How a Tanning Lotion Actually Helps
It Prepares Your Skin to Absorb UV More Efficiently
Hydrated skin absorbs UV light better than dry skin - full stop. When your skin is moisturised and supple, the UV can work more effectively, meaning you're getting more out of every minute on the sunbed or every hour in the sun.
Most of our lotions contain ingredients like Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil, and Sweet Almond Oil specifically for this reason. They're not just there to make your skin feel soft, they're actively improving the conditions for tanning.
It Stimulates Melanin Production
Some of our formulas go a step further and include ingredients designed to actively encourage melanin production. Our signature Biosine Complex® - found across several of our best-selling lotions - combines Tea Tree Oil, Olive Oil, Aloe Vera, and Panthenol to support your skin's natural pigmentation process and help you tan faster and deeper.
It Prevents That Unpleasant After-Tan Smell
Nobody talks about this enough. Tea Tree Oil, Biocide®, and similar antimicrobial ingredients work to neutralise the compounds that cause that distinctive post-tan odour.
Bronzers vs. Accelerators: What's the Difference?
This is where people often get confused, so it's worth being clear.
Accelerators contain no artificial colour. They work purely by optimising your skin's natural tanning process - better hydration, better melanin production, better results. The tan you develop is entirely your own.
Bronzers add an immediate hit of colour on top, with some also including DHA (a delayed bronzer) that develops over the following hours for a deeper, longer-lasting result. They're brilliant for a quick confidence boost or for tanners who want to push their colour further.
Neither is better than the other, it depends entirely on what you're after and the end result you are looking for.
Our Best-Selling Lotions and What Makes Them Work
Accelerator 40 Years Limited Edition
Our number one tanning lotion, now in a special limited edition celebrating 40 years of Australian Gold. The formula has been enhanced with Native Australian Oils alongside Vitamins A and E to maximise melanin production and let your skin tan as fast as nature allows.
The addition of DermaDark® adds a natural colour-enhancing effect even without UV exposure, making it a brilliant option if you want your tan to build gradually between sessions too. Finished with a classic CocoaDreams fragrance, it smells exactly like it sounds.
Rapid Tanning Intensifier Lotion
For anyone who loves Accelerator but wants to push their results further, this is the natural next step. The Biosine Complex® is present here in increased quantities, paired with Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, and Vitamin E for superior hydration and a faster, deeper tan. It absorbs quickly with no greasy residue - important if you're applying it at a salon or on the beach. Again, no bronzers - purely your natural pigmentation doing its thing.
A bestseller for over five years, and for good reason. Deviously Bronze packs in 45x dark bronzers - a blend of natural bronzers, Black Walnut Shell, Fennel Seed Extract, Melanin, and DHA, for an immediate hit of colour with a delayed golden tan developing over the following hours.
Shea Butter, Hemp Seed Oil, and Aloe Vera keep skin nourished throughout, while Absinthe Extract adds a purifying element that's become something of a signature. Best suited to those with a base tan already, or anyone with a naturally medium-to-darker skin tone. If you're very fair, we'd recommend building up gradually first.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Tanning Lotion
A few things that make a real difference:
Exfoliate beforehand. Dead skin cells sit on the surface and block UV absorption. A gentle exfoliation 24 hours before tanning means your lotion goes on evenly and your tan develops consistently.
Apply before UV exposure, not after. Apply your tanning lotion within 10 minutes of getting on the sunbed, or layer it on immediately before sun exposure (after your SPF).
Always wear SPF outdoors. Tanning lotions are not sun protection. Apply your SPF 20 minutes before going out in the sun, then layer your tanning lotion on top immediately before exposure. Reapply both every two hours, more frequently if you've been swimming or towel drying.
Moisturise after. A good after-tan moisturiser locks in colour and keeps skin hydrated - both of which extend how long your tan lasts.
Invest In Your Tan Today
A tanning lotion isn't just something nice to have, it's the thing that separates a good tan from a great one. By hydrating your skin, supporting melanin production, and protecting your skin during the process, it makes every session more effective and every tan more even, deeper, and longer-lasting.
If you're not sure where to start, the Accelerator 40 Years Limited Edition is our most loved product for a reason. And if you want to browse the full range, our best sellers page is a good place to see what's working for people right now.
