Understanding the Differences Between Bronzers, Accelerators & Tingles in Tanning

by Sophie Newing |

When it comes to achieving that sun-kissed glow, the world of tanning products can seem a little overwhelming. With terms like bronzers, delayed bronzers, accelerators, and tingles often used interchangeably, it's easy to get confused. But each product type plays a different role in your tanning journey.

Let’s break down what each one does and help you find the right fit for your tanning goals.

What Are Bronzers?

Bronzers are tanning lotions that include added ingredients to give your skin an immediate darker look, even before the natural tanning process kicks in. They’re perfect if you want quick results, a deeper tan or have found yourself hitting a tanning plateau.

There are typically two types of bronzers:

Immediate Bronzers: These provide an instant tint that washes off with water. Think of them like makeup for your body, they give you that immediate glow whilst your natural tan develops underneath.

DHA Bronzers (Delayed Bronzers): These contain an ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which reacts with the amino acids in your skin to gradually develop a longer-lasting colour over a few hours.

Bronzers are ideal for those who want to look tanned right away while developing a deeper, natural colour over time.

What Is a Tanning Accelerator?

An accelerator (also commonly known as intensifiers) is a type of tanning lotion designed to boost your skin’s natural tanning ability. It works by stimulating melanin production, which is the pigment responsible for the colour of your tan.

Accelerators are typically used by those who are just starting their tanning routine or have fair skin. They help condition and hydrate the skin and speed up the tanning process, but they do not include any bronzing agents, so there’s no immediate colour, just a gradual tan as your skin reacts to UV exposure.

What Are Tingle Lotions?

Tingle lotions are a more advanced tanning product designed for experienced tanners. These lotions increase blood circulation and oxygen flow to the skin, which in turn boosts melanin production and can lead to a faster, deeper tan. The “tingle” effect comes from active ingredients like Benzyl Nicotinate (derived from stinging nettles), which create a warming, tingling sensation on the skin shortly after application.

This sensation can vary from mild to intense, depending on the product and your skin sensitivity. Tingle lotions are not recommended for beginners or sensitive skin, but they can be incredibly effective for those looking to break through a tanning plateau.

*Always wash your hands after use and avoid applying near the face or sensitive areas.

How to Choose the Right Product for You

If you're new to tanning or have fairer skin, start with an accelerator. It will gently kickstart your tan while caring for your skin.

If you want immediate colour, go for a bronzer. Choose an instant bronzer for same-day glow or a DHA bronzer for longer-lasting results.

Each tanning product has its own purpose, and choosing the right one depends on where you are in your tanning journey. Whether you’re after a subtle glow or a deep bronze, understanding the difference between these options will help you tan smarter and safer.
